Sprung serpentine lock

Of course no surviving arquebi have yet come to light, but the world's oldest surviving gun lock, dated mid to late 15th century by the Royal Armouries, has a coiled leaf spring pushing the serpentine. The Japanese copied and preserved a Portuguese gun of c1500 which had a folded leaf, the Mary Rose pattern musket, circa 1525, was similarly sprung as were most sporting matchlocks. The military lever locks don't seem to appear until 30 years, or so, later.

There are period pictures but they don't seem to tally with the archaeology. Really depends how pious you want to be :thumbsup:
