Late last winter I was visiting an old friend who does blacksmithing, among many other traditional works. He has even brain tanned his own buffalo "burial robe" for when the time comes to cross the Great Divide!

Anyway, we were looking at some of his knives (I already have a nice deer knife he gave me a number of years ago) when I mentioned I'd love to have a nice little knife for squirrel hunting. He agreed to make one up for me.

Now, I fully expected to pay a fair price for the knife when I picked it up, but when I went to get it yesterday, he would have no part of any payment. He simply said that he truly enjoys making things that people will actually use, and he knew I'd put it to good use. And not only did he present the knife, but also a hand-made brain-tanned sheath. I offered to pay again, but he just said every knife needs a sheath!

In a lifetime, one doesn't come across a lot of true friends like this. To my friend "Buffalo" my heartfelt thanks...this gift will be used for a long time to come.

Great friend, a rare breed, treat him well.

The knife is nice, too.

Gorgeous.

Friends, just as a knife that fine, are few and far between now. I am certain you value both very highly.

This black powder "sport" seems to gather like-minded folks of the sort who find great joy in sharing, and this account is a fine example of why we cherish the bonds which develop among us. Thanks for sharing your story, your friend, and the gift photos. :hatsoff:

Thats a great little knife beautifly done, but you need to give him somehing for it ,even a penny. Its suppose to be bad luck to give a knife to someone

That's a very nice knife! I like the long handle so you get a good grip on it.

I believe the penny was intended to be included with the knife, and given back as payment.

Nice knife, and great friend. That's what I love about this hobby, all of the great friendships you make, and all of the cool stuff you share.

In England we have a tradition that we share with Scandinavian countries that one always gives a silver coin in return when receiving a knife as a gift, lest the blade should sever your friendship or come between you.
Nice looking knives.
