That's the way to do it!
I use 42 gr in my .54 Renegade perc. and .54 Lehigh flintlock and try for head shots. Shoots spot on at 25 yards for my normal 1-1/2" high at 50 yards zeroes.

good shooting with that New Englander.
Monday I got my .50 CVA out and loaded up with #7&1/2 shot topped with tissue wad.
set under the oak trees and got 2 squacks that came down looking for acorns - 1 came within 15' of me and I got him, another was on a limb about 10' off ground about 20' away.
