St. Louis style

Well, I finished one today. It has been in the works for a while now but I only have maybe 30 hours in it. I know I haven't posted anything for a ***** age so here is your chance to rag on me a little. Just be gentle my skin ain't more than a foot thick in most places

Done in the St Louis style this buff horn is one of the few I have ever seen with a nice twist to it. The base plug is inlaid with horn as is the decorative engrailing. The spout plug and the finial are antler. The finial is threaded with 1/2- 13 threads. All of the pins are horn and were hand made. I guess I qualify as a sick individual for doing the opposite twist thing on the throat area but as Gus will be more than happy to tell you ,the throat of the horn is not as twisted as I am.

It will soon be graced with one of Kris Polizzi's great custom made straps.

One question is that ain't a buff horn so where did you get one that black or is it dyed?

Cliff, that is most definitely a buff horn. If you had seen it before I started you would not question its heritage. It was a classic before picture of a buff horn. This one came out of the same batch of horns

Dang, it just don't look like the common buff horn and I am not referring to work you put into it! It looks longer than the average buff horn and they are few and far between with the curl. That must have been an ole buff!

I bought a batch of 20 of these horns from a guy in Wyoming and 3 of them had that twist in them. the one I finished had the most twist of the three. All 20 of the horns were 17 to 20 inches measured around the outside curve. I will say though that they finish best at about 14 to 16 inches

That's nicer than any St. Louis style horn I've seen. Amazing work, nothing to rag about at all that I can see.

I am not qualified to critique workmanship, your style is just different than what I like. I prefer very simple and plain and muted colors.

I do appreciate all the comments. It is a very different style and would not appeal to a lot of people. I know their isn't a lot of info around a out this style but I make one now and then just to try something different.

Anywho! ... Your horny buffalo looks great, but that reverse twist at the spout throws my eyeballs for a loop! :shocked2:

That's an award winner right there,i have filed and smoothed a few horns for a better look and buff has to be ten times as hard.The horns on this old booger were like your rough one pictured,and i forgot to wear glasses at first,oooooweeeee won't ever do that again! You must be a truck driver
