Stain mixed with permalyn

Is this something that can be done.
Tinting permalyn to give a slightly darker finish?

Don't. Get the wood the color you want and then seal and finish. Transtint will work, but if you do much more than a tint it can look muddy. I would not try to color change with it.

The solvents in the stains and the finishes are the way they are so that the product works as intended and dries as intended with the penetration intended. When you start mixing stuff together you may or may not completely hose up how the two work. They WILL work fine individually, you will have to test whether or not they work when mixed, and I would guarantee that dry time takes a good bit to a lot longer if you mix stain in your permalyn.

What is stopping you from getting the color you want before you seal and finish?

Yes, Transtint will work well. I've had no problem with a muddy appearance, but I typically use this method with warmer colors such as honey amber. It doesn't necessarily mix well with the Permalyn, but I just stir it vigorously and use it.
