Nothing "cheap" is good, nothing "good" is cheap. What are you looking for and how much are you willing to spend? What kind of rifle are you building/having built?

If you want to spend $300 you get this....

The quality of the wood should match the quality of the gun. I hate to see a real fancy gun with a cheap piece of wood. Or a poorboy with a beautiful piece. For my eye, I think poorboys look good with just a little bit of curl.

This is my first build besides the GPR kit, So I do not want to spend alot on the wood. I am learning carving also, but need something good, for a early 1800 type flintlock, maple or walnut. full stock. not sure exactly which gun I am going to build yet. Cant see spending a lot on my first carving job outside the practice I am doing. But I would like a quality piece of wood, After this first one I am sure I will spend more on the wood.

I defer the good wood for the skilled and gifted. I buy cheap wood and learn on that. Did I say I'm cheap?

BTW, I'd rather see the wood before buying it so I'm not heavy into mail order wood. I'll go to Friendship and ship the wood back and let it age, age and age in my home climate before the first chisel touches it or first pencil scribe line is drawn on it.
