Well my new Traditions Crockett has some stock damage behind the lock:

The wood is extremely thin and some chips fell out when removing the lock for the first time. The area in front of the trigger recess is chopped out as you can see. Aalso there’s a crack all the way across beside the barrel.

Is this damage self limiting? Will it cause any issues? Should I be concerned? Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about that either. If it gets worse fix it.

For decades I've been convinced that the Spanish rifle builders use green undried wood to make their stocks.

And after everything is made and parts are installed the wood finally dries and the stocks begin to crack.

It ain't a crack,, it's a compression mark from the machinists clamp/press drill guide.
Yeah, it's normal for chip's to fall out from, and/or be trimmed from factory made inlets.
They don't re-sharpen bit's with each cut. I cut all them little burrs outta there asap.
Clean it up,
I don't wanna find them later on after they finally drop off.
It doesn't hurt to get in there and judiciously apply a little wood sealer or finish (any of several types used/recommended here),
,with a Q-tip or small brush,
It's not custom, it's factory. It's yours,, care for it, ;).

Swelling of the wood can happen when you add a sealer, so be careful around inlet perimeters unless your prepared to re-fit an inlet,,
, there's instruction to be found how to do that stuff too down there in the gun-builders, easy, common,,

Thank you! As long as it’s still good to go and fine for shooting I feel much better about it.

Glue the chip down with small amount of super glue,

As for the crack, which I don't believe it is, use the following method if it is.

Along the crack drill very fine holes into the crack....3-5 of them. The holes should be the diameter of a round wooden toothpick.

Get the small individual use Gorilla glue tubes, expanding type. Have your tooth picks snipped in half. Squirt the gorilla glue into the holes until they are full. Insert the Toothpicks to plug the holes. As the glue expands it will seep into the crack. When it hardens completely you can grind off the excess or I prefer to cut it away as it begins to harden, but still soft enough to cut with a knife.

I have used this method successfully on old Spanish Sidelock shotguns for year. Prevents further crack well.

Again, I don't believe it is, but if one develops, this method does help.
