i clean mine after use then run a patch with cleanzoil down the bore. i also wipe down the exterior. i pull my rifles out every couple of months just to check condition. i run another cleanzoil patch down the bore just to check for rust, been o.k. so far. ballistol would probably do the same. i don't leave anything long term un-inspected. don't tempt the fates. your results may vary.

I use Non-aerosol Ballistol. Second choice would be BreakFree in non-aerosol. I don't like ANY aerosol for long term storage, it is just too thin for my liking. :shake:

Proper cleaning is just as important as what you put in it to preserve it. If it is not clean & dry, you lost half of the battle before ya started.....

There's only one sure-fire way to stop bore corrosion due to extended storage.
Take it out & shoot it more often! :blah:

I wab my bore with Bore Butter. No rust after a year of storage. You must store your guns in a low humidity environment, and look in on them occasionally. Closely inspect for any signs of rust starting.

i clean my m-l hot soap and water dry it then use wd-40. leave set for 2 days swab the bore with wd again same 2 days later. that gets it clean and dry then a light coat of gun oil. then the best place is in the gun safe with a golden rod. if not that then store the rifle horisonal and run a patch down the bore once a month if it is an onpen room.

I final swab with castor oil and I fondle my guns quite often, so I am always running a oily patch down the bore, but that is not extended, although this method seems to work on those that remain in the safe for long periods with no ill effects!.

LONG TERM STORAGE...BARREL DOWN! keeps a lot of oil and crud from migrating into the breech area and the lock!

I use Rem-oil.
After my hot soapy water cleaning routine I dry the bore with my air compressor and several dry patches. I then spray Rem-oil down the hot bore until it comes out the nipple or vent. I then swab the bore with a patch soaked in Rem-oil. I blow the excess out with the compressor and swab again with dry patch. This leaves a good coating of oil in the bore and breech. I have not had rust, period, even after 6+ months of storage.

After a thorough cleaning and drying I swab the bore and entire rifle liberally with bore butter, and, like you, store all my firearms muzzle down. I store them in a gun safe with a 40w light bulb on the floor of the safe. I have been using bore butter ever since there has been bore butter and have never experienced any rust (inside or out). But then again, it must be pretty dry inside my safe. For all my breech loading firearms, I use Rem Oil. Works for me.

I wipe everything down including the bores in my safe once a month just to be sure, I also have a Golden Rod..

cherokee has it right. i dont know how it works but it works. but i have one in my safe with my winchesters and other colector rifles and no rust in over 12 years.

I have been using EEZOX. I have had no rust while using this stuff. But I check my guns often and wipe them down each time.
