How would I go about removing the blueing from metal in order to eventually replace with a brown finish? :hmm:

I use Birchwood-Casey Blue and Rust Remover and some fine steel wool. I tried Naval Jelly once and it sucked but that's just my opinion. Maybe it's better on toast.

The guy at Pecatonica told me to use snowball toilet cleaner.I have not got that far on my project yet so I have not tried it yet. But he ought to know what he is talking about. What ever you end up using please let me know how it works. Dew

I use Brownell's steel white. It removes the blueing and rust without using anything to scrub with. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It will need to be finished right away or oiled to keep the rust from attacking it.

I also used the Birchwood-Casey Blue and Rust Remover. It was too simple following the directions on the bottle. Use a degreaser to remove any oils or grease (rubbing alcohol works). Rinse the barrel with water to remove degreaser (don't really need to do this using the alcohol). Use a well saturated dobbing swab (like you'd use with leather dye)to apply the remover and let it sit for about 2 minutes. Use fine steel wool (000 or 0000) to remove the bluing. Repeat if necessary. The bluing comes right off and you'r down to bare metal. Whole thing might take 10 minutes if you do two applications.

I didn't have a degreaser, and didn't know that rubbing alcohol would do the trick, so I ended up using 3 applications to get all the bluing off mine. I still had it finished inside 15 minutes. It's too simple, cheap (about $3-$4 for the bottle), and works really well. :hatsoff:
