Having read the thread below on stuck nipples, does it really matter if they are stuck fast on an original? If they are in good shooting order is it worth risking damaging a valuable antique trying to get them out? Or does it make more sense to carry on using it occasionally and only worry about it when they become unserviceable.

I've pretty much given up trying to remove the nipples on my original Rogers & Spencer (below) and since they seem to have had little wear I plan to leave well alone. The only thing that bothers me slightly is the fear of water getting into the threads during cleaning and rusting during storage but I spray the chambers well with gun oil and hope for the best.

If it was a repro I'd probably be more determined and wouldn't worry so much about damaging the gun.

What do you think when it comes to original antiques?

Regards all,

Probably goes without saying - don't be dry firing that one . If you do shoot it you might try different size caps, some brands are looser/tighter fit than other brands.

Nice looking gun you have there!

I think your probably right in leaving them alone.
My only comment about keeping water out of the threads after you have cleaned your gun is you might want to heat the cylinder up to about 220 degrees F to boil out the remaining water.
If that is not practical, you should spray some WD40 into each chamber.
The WD in WD40 stands for water displacement so it will penetrate the threads and drive out the water while providing some protection.
Applying a good light weight gun oil like Birchwood Sheath or Barricade will finish the job.

zonie :)
