I recently purchased a 50 caliber flintlock pistol. Recommended load is 20-35 gr fffg. Black powder is extremely difficult to find in my area. I have a good supply of ffg for my 54 cal rifles and shotguns. Is it possible to fire a few rounds until I find some fffg? This may be a silly question but you folks are my source of info. "Muzzleloader" around here means one of those fancy single shot rifles that use shotgun primers. If you ask for "black powder" in the gun shops you get Pyrodex and Triple Seven and a lecture on why you shouldn't bother with BP. :youcrazy:

Shoot away FF won't heart a thing. Might shoot a little dirtier and be a little less accurate than FFF. But then again it might not. While i see nothing wrong with 777 or Pyrodex i prefer Black Powder. Keep in mind if you try 777 you need to reduce your loads some. I think it is 15% 777 burns a little hotter than black powder or Pyrodex.

Thanks. I'll give it a try. I prefer BP myself. I Tried the in-line guns when they first came out. Sold it 6 months later. Hard for me to beat rock and steel.

2Fg will be OK. Might not burn as completely in a short barrel like you would expect from triple Fg. And will be dirtier, but it will work. This game is not about perfection, just trying your best with what you have. (within safe bounds)

That 777 or pyrodex isn't gonna fire in that flintlock pistol. The substitutes are for percussion and inline guns only.

Luie's right!
Don't worry folks. Only two things are banned in our home---lentils and black powder substitutes!

I shoot 25 grains ffg in my Traditions .50 cal pistol with excellent accuracy out to 50 yards. With enough elevation I can hit a target at 100 (somewhere on the paper) If you don't have 4f for primer powder you can crush some of the 2f up for your pan. Depending on the lock, 2f may work just fine in the pan just the way it is.

My.45 long rifle prefers 2ffg. for main charge and pan. its deadly accurate.

Fired off the Trapper a bunch yesterday with the ffg with no problems at all. Since I had some 4f for priming, I went ahead and used that. Next time I will try the ffg for the prime also.
Thanks everyone.
