First deer with black powder. Sorry, no pics as my buddy has the camera.

11/29/04 - Indiana County, PA - 10:30 AM

45 paces, off hand shot
5 points, app 125 lbs.
Lyman Trade Rifle
70 gr. Goex 2f
Ox Yoke wad
.018 pre-lubed pillow ticking patch
.490 round ball

Shot entered about the third rib from the front shoulder. Took out a lobe of the lung and the liver. Deer travelled app. 40 yards before stumbling, got up and then went down for good. He also had the good grace to end things on level ground, a rarity where we hunt. I couldn't be more pleased with the overall performance of rifle and load. Thanks to all here who, directly or indirectly, helped me figure out some things about BP shooting. I am a convert.

Congratulations. The simple PRB is surprisingly good isn't it?

Huzzah!!! You will probably never feels a high like you just earned, but by all means keep trying. Your first ML deer is a real trophy. That it is a buck is icing on the cake. :applause:

HUZZAH! HUZZAH! HUZZAH!

There's just nothing better in this world than watching a buck crumble under the mighty will of a patched round ball! I hope that you thanked said majestic creature for the thoughtful giving of his life to feed your family in the coming months...just a little something that I do to ensure successful hunts in the future...

Congrats on not only your triumph, but your happy conversion to the Traditional Hunt...

...Next year, you'll be wearing buckskins when you go, I reckon.

HUZZAH! HUZZAH! Good Show!

PS: bet you're wondering what flintlock hunting is like now, huh???

Picked up a .54 cal. flintlock barrel for the Renegade just last week. 1:66 for PRB. Itching to break it in.

1:66" sounds like a TC round ball barrel...if it is, and it's new from Fox Ridge, it should already have TC's new, redesigned vent liner.

If not, I'd like to strongly suggest you install one of TC's new liners...they are extremely, extremely fast, self cleaning, no vent picking, etc...two to a package for $4-5 from TC...like shooting a .30-30

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised that it came so equipped and had already purchased the vent liner anticipating I'd have to replace the old touch hole. Now that I have an extra liner, though, I have an excuse to get another gun to go with it. Always look for the silver lining.

I once had the lyman trade rifle. Very nice gun but the 1-48 twist i felt was too fast forprb so I bought a traditions kentucky. But, the prb seemed to work well for you so what do i know. Now you will probably do like i did and get rid of your centerfire deer rifles and stick with bp and prbs. My son is getting one from santa and the 30 30 is going back to grampas gun cabinet(borrowed)
