I have a whole case of expeller pressed sunflower oil...anyone ever use it for patch lube? I thought of mixing some with beeswax and giving it a shot...seems to have no salt. If not patch lube, what would or could it be used for in our sport?
Thanks

To answer you question,
I would be hesitant to use it because; Although sunflower oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil, it is made up of mostly polyunsaturated fat. This makes the oil highly susceptible to oxidation and drying, compared to olive oil.

I'm sure someone has tried it though and thinks it is the cats meow.

Give it a go.....if it is not the desired consistency when it cools you can re-melt and adjust.
Make a small batch and low heat. Melt the bees wax gently....A double boiler would be best.

Don't use your wife's cookware. :haha:

I routinely use corn oil to keep my patches lubed when carrying a supply in my bag. I put them in an empty percussion cap tin and dribble a bit of corn oil on them. They don't dry out and I've never had a problem.
If sunflower oil has similar properties to corn oil, it should work the same.

Several years back when I had some time to play, I ran some tests using several types of cooking, plant, animal, fish, and grain oils and found no noticeable difference. I think sunflower oil was about the only common oil I did not test. But I see no reason why it should not work. :idunno:

I just made some lube in about the consistency of Chapstick out of olive oil and bees wax....I am also going to make some with the same consistency only out of sunflower oil, I will then make comparisons shooting off a rest, the only difference will be the lube...when I do this I'll post results. Thanks guys

Thanks. It will be nice to see if there's any difference.
