Tired of breaking wooden ramrods?
It is not PC, but I will share my secret.
I use a hardwood like sapele or imbuya (the color of dark mahogany). I bandsaw 4 strips about 1/4 inch square to length with the grain flowing correctly. I then Gorilla Glue the strips together. I then take a radius bit with the router and make a rod.
Only at the ends can you detect that it is a "laminate". The length of the ramrod looks like a one-piece dowel.
Needless to say, they are mega strong and resilient.
You could try hickory I suppose, I never have.
I am willing to bet that a lot of guys have been doing this without breathing a word!
