Superimposed load rifle

I was asked by a local gun shop owner to help ID a gun for a customer. She inherited it 20 years ago and has no information on it. The tang has been repaired at some time.

It's a 45 cal Mule Ear superimposed load rifle. There are no markings on the gun. Obviously this is not something you see often.

I tried to get good photos so if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

The single trigger, in particular the "anchor" shaped lock bolt washer, and the odd cheekpiece indicate a New England rifle, most likely made in New York. The color on the two mule ear hammers makes them look almost new. Can you provide a closer, more clear photo looking directly down on the two nipples to see what they, and the barrel surface around them, look like?

I too feel it has a New England influence, possibly southern Vermont or New Hampshire but that's just a guess on my part. BTW, New York is not a part of New England.

I had never heard of a superimposed load. Little search engine action and I’m now educated. Learn something new every day!
