I am looking for a supplier for solid brass tacks. I have been buying them by the 1000 from a upholstery supplier in OK but they only have one size, 5/16” head and ½” shank. I am looking for some other sizes, ¼”, 3/8”, ½”, etc”¦not too concerned with the shank length. If anyone knows of one I would appreciate the lead.

track of the wolf, crazy crow, bead shops ect.
just ordered some from track.

All the tacks I get from Crazy Crow are solid brass, with steel shanks. I think you talked to the wrong person.

What Wick said - I buy several thousand a year from Crazy Crow and all of the brass ones are solid brass head with steel shank - the nickel and silver ones are probably plated.......

If you want the real McCoy, solid brass with solid brass square shanks go to www.thetrunkshoppe.com
two caveats -
1) they are not cheap (but depending on your wants/desires/needs they are worth it)

2) They are soft so you need to take extra care in working with them.......

Listen to Grey Wolf! The original tracks had square shanks and were solid brass. The folks at the Trunk Shoppe are nice- tell them you are a buck skinner and only need ten or fifteen tacks and they should be able to put together a small order for you.
You'll need to make a dished out surface for the tack heads- bedding compound works pretty good. Fill a depression with the compound and then put a waxed tack head over it- a perfect match. I know the Indians peen hammered the tack heads on the back side but then you see a lot of old sheaths with missing tacks. It SEEMS to me- no evidence either way- that a Mountain man may have just hammered over the shank and let it go at that.
