Just wondering if all the swamp weight class barrel dimentions are the same between manufacturers. Example:

If I had a stock that was channeled out for a 42"
"C" weight swamp barrel, Would barrel manufacturers like Rice, GM, Colrain in "C" weight all have the same dimentions so I could use either of them in it?

You need to do some measuring and talk to a guy who is holding calipres and the barrel you want to buy in his hand. My guess is that two diffrent machinists building barrels in two diffrent shops are going to produce two unique profiles.

AND, to add to that ...isn't there the golden age and pre-revolutionary differences in the tapers??

i would want my barrel before inletting....take a look in the track catalog...it has some illustrations and dimensions......

They not only vary form Company to Company, they vary in the SAME company sometimes. I have had 2 supposedly same barrels have .020 dif in the width.
That is why when you buy a Precarve stock, you usually have to scrape some on the barrel inlet to get the barrel in, as they've had the same issue & don't want it to be too big a inlet.

Depends on the profile, I think. There are a couple profiles that are more or less standardized - the 38" "Isaac Haines" (first made by Don Getz and widely copied), the 42", and 44" in B, C, and D weights. The Edward Marshall in some weights, as well and one of the common Jaeger profiles is standardized too, I think. Probably some minor variations between manufacturers, but they are all trying to fit the same pre-inlet stocks.

Then there are profiles specific to a specific maker - Rice has several profiles not offered elsewhere that I know of.

They are not generally the same. Each builder may have worked off a different "original" or whatever.

Here is a quick comparison between four of the "same" profiles offered by Colerain and Rice. On just about all of them the breech/muzzle is different on some of the profiles.

That is why if you are having a swamped barrel inletted the builder usually wants the barrel "in hand" while doing the inlet.

Well, "it appears" that the "A" weights are different for each company but the "B" and "C" weights are the same.

Yes, I see that now the 44" barrels for each are a different profile. Well, Its like Dave Keck at Knob Mountain says "send me your barrel because they can each be a little different." if you want him to inlet it.

Because of the variation in bbls, the bbl inletters require that the bbl be shipped to them.

The bbl is set into "Bondo" which is used mainly for auto body work and when the "Bondo" is "set", the bbl is removed and the resultant "cavity" of the bbl is then used to carve the stock.

Upon receiving the blank w/ the bbl and RR work done, the blank and inletted bbl are truly a very close fit.....Fred

I stand corrected. I thought they were closer, though I did expect some variation.
