I finally broke down and ordered 25bs. of Swiss.I have been shooting a lot of sub's and goex, really never had a problem with Goex(or the sub's)I find that the shot to shot consistency is better with real black powder.I guess my question is..How much should I reduce the loads(for Swiss)? It has been to dang hot this old body to be out in this heat(103). I have read where a few have switched from Goex to Swiss and reduced your loads.Thank you in advance..Respectfully Montanadan

Swiss is great, it's all I use in my Green Mtn .50 cal flint. 60 grains of 3F gives me terrific accuracy, even out to 100 yds.

Montanadan in Wyoming- I do not believe there is any loading data published by Swiss powder, they leave you on your own. I just tested Swiss 2F and 3F against Goex 2F and 3F. Rifle a Jacob Wigle Westmoreland, Co PA flint I built, 38" .50 cal 7/8 L.C. Rice barrel. Will post pictures of these targets and the rifle, but it may be a few weeks. .490 cast ball, patch is .010 (compressed, .015 ratchet on the mike) 7 oz denim (kinda off-white color) from WalMart. Lube is half Murphy Oil Soap and half 91% alcohol, no cleaning at all between shots or powders during the day's shooting. These pairs were shot about two weeks apart, five to six or seven shots per group (I used one bore seasoner off target, which is usually lower in velocity, and deleted. If not, I counted it). 50 gr Goex 3F, 1492 fps, spread 63 fps, and 1503, spread 29 the next session. 50 gr Swiss 3F (same measure), 1618, S 12, and 1623, S 21. 80 Swiss 3F, 2030, S 36, and 80 Goex 2F, 1742, spread 25. Next session. 80 Swiss 2F, 1857, spread 39, and 80 Goex 2F, 1714, spread 50. Temperature was 94 degrees when I got done. Group size, five shot, 50 yards, bench, in the order above, were 1.2 inches, and 0.9; 2.0 (Swiss 50), four of them in 1.1, and 1.25; 1.1 (80 Swiss 3F at 2030 fps), and 1.3 (Goex 2F); 1.5 (80 Swiss 2F, an open group, no flyers), and 1.0 for 80 Goex 2F. The Swiss does not settle much in the measure, but Goex settles if tapped. The Swiss fouled my barrel in the first six inches or so at the breech. The first session I used lube of one part Murphy Oil Soap to two parts alcohol, (pre-wet the patches and keep them in a cap tin), and the balls seated hard on the Swiss powder. Not enough lube. Second session, I used half and half, no problem. Again, NO CLEANING OR WIPING at all between shots or groups or between powders. I like both powders very much. Lyman's Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual, 2nd edition, shows a maximum charge of 120 grains of both Goex 2F AND 3F with a round ball, velocities 1991 and 2045 fps in a 32 inch barrel, but they don't list Swiss. I got 2030 fps with 80 grains of Swiss 3F, but they took 120 grains of Goex 3F to get 2045. I think if you are using moderate loads, pressure would not be a concern. What caliber are you shooting?

Herb- the calibers will range from .45 to .54,as well as a bunch of pistols and revolvers(32 to 45).I use "Stumpkiller's" patch lube, will also load some cartridges.I am currently waiting for my Tryon to get here(54 cal.)I do appreciate your reply .My order was split 13 lbs. of 2fg and 12lbs. of 3fg.The last bunch of Goex that I bought through the club seems to be a lot better than the previous batch. I have a Lyman GP in 54,I only shoot round balls. Thanks again for your reply..Respectfully Montanadan (in Wyoming)
