The vinegar thread got me thinking about the drinking of vinegar. It reminded me of the Switchel made since 18th c drunk by haymakers.

Switchel

Ginger Switchel

Makes 1-2 drinks

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
4 teaspoons sweetener (molasses, maple syrup, honey, sugar)
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger or 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 cup water

Combine all ingredients in a jar or glass. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to a day.

Shake or stir before serving. Taste and adjust sweetener, if desired. If using fresh ginger, strain through a fine sieve or cheesecloth.

Pour over ice or mix with soda water, if desired.

Swichel?? Bud allways pronounced it Swizzel,,close enough, that is how we mixed it,no ginger, but in quarts..Still drink it when it's hot out.

I'm originally from New England, and that's what I remember as a kid it being called.

Bud, was an old friend of mine, real name was Charles, everyone called him Bud,,hayed with him some,,

I never thought to refrigerate it for a spell or mix it with soda water......I'm usually hot and thirsty when I make it so it gets drank immediately..... :idunno:

The advantage to molasses over the other sweeteners is that you get a dose of potassium that you don't get from sugars, or honey. At the end of a hot day or high activity in hot weather, folks feeling very tired and sore, may in fact be experiencing muscle fatigue and tightening due to reduced potassium...this can eventually lead to cramps, especially of the calf muscles.

So..., if you can..., make it with molasses.
