I just got a Navy arms side-by-side 12 guage. I bought it used for $185. Does anybody know if Navy arms supplies owners' manuals for these guns.

I can't wait to try this thing out, but would feel a lot more comfortable after reading the manual. This is my first Muzzleloading shotgun/smoothbore.

Dont have what you need, but I can tell you the 12 sxs is a blast to shoot, from .69's, buckshot, huntin' loads. A very versitile gun. I have kilt many a small game critter with huntin loads, and I get a kick out of shootin .69's and buckshot out of her. Must be some sort of sickness......

I have a Navy Arms double barrel. They do have a manual for there shotguns. I used the info in it amd in the T/C manual as well as from things i read in muzzleloader magazines. If you start with 70 grs of 3f Black powder or the same volume of Pyrodex RS, an overpowder wad, half a lubed fiber cushion wad, 1 0z (just use the 70gr setting on your powder measurer to get 1 oz) of shot, and an overshot card wad. You can also use plastic shot cups to tighten up the pattern. They list 102 gr. (3 3/4drams)of powder and 1 1/4 oz of shot as a maximum load. I normally use 90-95 grs of Pyrodex RS and 1 1/4 oz of shot for most of my hunting. My shotgun has cylinder bore barrels. Mine also shoots well with .690 rd. balls.

Thanks Rebel,

That's the info I was looking for for starters. At least enough to let me get started off without wondering where I stand in regards to maximum loads and such.

I agree Flint50, if this is a sickness I hope there is no cure, I want to find a good load for 6 and/or 4 shot for this gun. Once that's done I haven't yet decided whether I'll try Buckshot, roundballs, or both first, after all it's got two barrels.

Has anyone ever tried Buck and Ball loads from a SxS?

Never from my double but i did from the N.W. Tradegun. I wasn't impressed. I also tried just #4 buck alone and wouldn't trust it past 15-20 yds. My double will shoot .690 rd balls into a 4 shot (2 from each barrel) group of one ragged hole at 25 yds. I hope to try it with balls at longer ranges soon.

:agree: I gave up on the "buck & ball" idea pretty quick. If the buck is placed atop the ball, normal military style, The ball seems to drive through and scatter the buck wildly. If the buck is loaded atop the wad and the ball on top of the buck, I think the buck is squashed out of round and still scatters badly.
For military purposes that wild scattering was OK, on massed troops that buck was likely to hit someone and it didn't matter if the guy hit were 50 feet from the guy aimed at.
I have had good patterns at 40 yards from normal buckshot loads in "00", "0", and #4 over 3 1/4 drams and two hard card wads and a thin overshot. I never hunted big game with ML double but often thought that with a .648" ball inside a plastic wad (only time I'd use plastic) giving me fist size groups at 50 yds. and a good pattern of buck in the other barrel is would be a fine brush country deer gun. :m2c:

I wouldn't shoot a buck and ball load for any purpose other than curiousity. It's illegal to hunt deer with more than a single projectile in PA anyway, except in a couple of limited areas in high population areas.

The .648 ball and plastic wad would be legal for our regular season, though. Maybe someday I'll try the roundball for deer, it should make for some challenging stalking.
