Well, I finally got the gusto built up to redo my first rifle. I refinished my T/C hawken .45 caliber rifle this week. I wanted to go with something a little bit darker than the factory look, and I really don't like the feel or look of the shiny smooth look of the factory gun. I stripped the finish off of it using Citrisrip spray, and let that sit overnight. Then, after stripping and sanding with 220 grit sand sponges, I removed all the hardware (I posted previously about trying to remove the patchbox). After sanding and rubbing down with tack cloth, I put two coats of minwax dark walnut, rubbing down with #4-0 steel wool in between coats. After that, I rubbed in 3 coats of Homer Formby Tung Oil, again rubbing down with #4-0 steel wool in between coats. In between coats 2 and 3 of tung oil, I took all the brass and degreased it and clean and polished with #4-0 steel wool and Flitz polish. Lastly, I blackened the brass with Birchwood Casey's Brass Black. It took many coats of that to get the deep color that I wanted. I really like that it looks a bit more aged and has a "warm and used" look to it, which is exactly the look that I wanted. The only piece that gave me absolute fits is the Lock bolt washer. For whatever reason, the Brass Black would not work on this piece. Overall though, I am happy with my first attempt. I am going to attempt my CVA Hawken in the next few weeks. This was my first attempt, and any advice on this would be completely appreciated.

Thanks for sharing your photos and steps! I think it looks awesome, and most importantly you like it as well!

Looks good, I have been trying to make up my mind about a refinish for my T/C flint. You give me hope! What rear sight are you using?

Michael

meanmike, the sight that I am using is from The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium. Here is the link for it: http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?ProductID=906&do=detail&Cat2Option=yes
I had to file the notch in it myself, and the Hawken Shop has one as well for less, but the one from the Hawken Shop you have to drill the holes in it yourself. Not a problem, as someone on here has posted the hole spacing for both the new style and the old style T/C spacings.

Very nice! I didn't know they made such a product to blacken brass. I just redid a hawken and replaced all of the brass with iron. Had I known differently I may have just blackened it.

Nice ! You might try some cold blue on the washer and if that don't work, get a Renegade washer. They are black. I reworked a Renegade, and it looks way better than factory.

I did not know that TC made a Hawken with black furniture until a few weeks ago. A LGS had a beautiful TC Hawken target model with round ball barrel, and nice piece of wood, all decked out in shiny black. New in the box, they wanted $900.

Probably wasn't new. They made the Renegade with black/blued furniture. I know other places carry steel furniture for them though. $900 seems way too high for it too. I think they were between $500-700 when TC stopped making them.

When I bought mine several years back, it was used and I only paid $125 for it, probably 7-8 years ago. Replaced the rear sight 2 years ago for $25, and refinishing supplies were probaby $50 bucks total. Barrel is still plenty accurate. Spent about 4 days total in the refinish. Thanks everyone for the compliments. Now I just need the time to go shoot it

I've used their replacement rear sight on several rifles. The shank is "dimpled" for hole placement. Easy as pie.

It's a really good looking and functional sight, and certainly easy to install.

I have 3 Renegades,4 Hawkens, a Cherokee, a Seneca, and a Patriot. Believe me, this gun in the LGS was new and a special edition Target rifle that TC produced with a round ball barrel, real nice wood. It had Target Model Hawken on the box. and all furniture was gloss black. I know the shop owner, very well. He said he had seen one on Gun broker for 1200.00

i believe it was the Hawken Custom that also had all blue furniture, no patchbox, and a 30in roundball twist barrel with a high-gloss blue from the custom shop.

Thanks,....You sir are correct Hawken Custom, no patch box, super fancy wood and gloss black furniture, and round ball barrel from the custom shop. I googled Hawken custom and there are some nice pics.

Ah, OK I stand corrected then. What was the twist rate on the Hawken Custom? Was the blued furniture steel or just professionally darkened/antiqued brass?

the furniture was blue steel & I believe the twist was 1 in 60 for roundballs.
