Just got the finish off the stock of the T/C Hawken, the stuff they use looks like a an opage red stain. More of a filler because it really hides the grain. The wood is really pretty but I had to do alot of work to get the red stuff off.

I started to use a professional stripper but decided to use strip ezz. It softened finish enough so that I could use 00 steel wool to remove most. I then started sanding using 180 to 600 grain sandpaper. I used the 180 to remove the stubborn red stuff , then moved to 220,400 and then 600. Played perticular care not to change contour. Also sanded after the 180 with all brass on the gun.

I used to use that approach...then I found a local antique furniture place that had a commercial chemical stripping booth...so for the last few I've done, I drop off a stock at their shop, pick it up a week later for $20, and it's perfectly clean & dry to the bare wood, no sanding to change stock dimensions, etc...I just take it home and apply the first coat of Tru-Oil
