That lock will require some inletting inside where the old lock sat. The main difference is that the T/C lock uses a coil spring and the L&R lock uses a V spring. Nothing you can't handle with a Dremmel Tool and a little bit of patience. You will love the difference in lock speed, you will notice the difference.

I understand years ago TC's Flnt locks left a lot to be desired, but FWIW, it might be interesting to make a new, current comparison.

TC's current production locks have been significantly redesigned, are very fast, 100% reliable, give long flint life, etc.

And with the redesigned vent liner, Goex, and a black english flint it's like shooting a .30-30...instantaneous, accurate, etc...can't imagine ignition being any faster.

:v

RB, you're probably right, my experience is with locks from the 70s & early 8os. This one I just got has a real soft spring. What do you think, keep it or send it to T/C for an upgrade?

Rick

If it's that old it could use several upgrades...and when I've sent locks in that old, they've just sent me an entire new production lock assemblies.

Please take this advice: Put together a nice memo with the lock and priority mail it directly to the attention of TC's Service Manager Tim Pancurak.

DO NOT call ahead of time, and under no circumstances discuss it with the rank & file in the customer service center or repair department...some of their attitudes are like they're paying for it out of their own pockets.

Mention that you like the TC Hawken but the lock is simply not reliable...can he look it over and get it to the condition where you can trust it, can count on it for accurate target shooting and deer hunting, etc...you get my drift...he'll take care of you.

Send it Priority Mail / Delivery Confirmation:
Mr. Tim Pancurak

As busy as they are right now, he'll probably just tell someone to pull a new lock off the shelf and send it right back out to you...I think he's replaced 3-4 complete locks for me...several others on the board have followed this approach with excellent results.

The redesigned TC locks are really flawless now...work great with Tom Fuller 3/4" wide (x 7/8" long) BEF's...and get yourself the redesigned vent liner if you don't already have it...and I wouldn't stay with the TC equipment if they weren't 100% reliable...deer hunting is too important to me...I've now filled 16 buck and 6 doe tags with them and they've fired like a .30-30 every time I've dropped the hammer.

Thanks RB, I'll probably do that right after the New Year, Don't want it mixed in with all the Christmas packages getting lost. By the way, this is a percussion lock, will that make any difference?

Oh yes, big difference...I thought you were talking about an old style Flint lock which they redesigned to get it right...never had any problems with a cap lock that required sending the whole thing back in.

The old style did have weaker mainsprings/smaller guiderods and TC did strengthen them...you could call Customer Service (ask for Jeanette) and explain what you've got...she'll probably mail you a replacement spring & guide rod no charge... (worse case the new stronger springs & rods only cost a few bucks)

Roundball:

I have a TC 50 cal. Renegade that I would like to convert to flintlock. Can I get a TC and/or L & R flintlock and drop in, of course I know I'll have to get a new flintlock barrel.

Thanks,
