I would like to order a couple of new nipples and a good wrench for a T/C Hawken .50. I have looked at some special nipples that are supposed to get a hotter spark to the powder but I can't find any model or size number on the old original nipple. Can I get some suggestions?
Thanks

I think the first "Hot Shot" nipples were made by Uncle Mikes and latter sold by Thompson Center. Standard nipples are still being sold. The tread is 1/4-28. Some nipple wrenches will not work well with the barrel, still in the stock. TC used to sell a wrench with enclosed head and angled handle, but I have not see one for sale lately. I usually pull the barrel, and then remove the nipple. I always put some anti-seize grease on the threads, with a tooth pick, before re-installing it.

Thompson Center used two different length nipples depending on the model.

They were however, both 1/4"-28 tpi.

The regular nipple was .635" in overall length.

They also made a "short" nipple, sometimes referred to as a pistol nipple that is only .500" in overall length.

The Hot Shot nipples, later packed by T/C have the same dimensions as the regular nipple (.635" LOA) with the addition of two small holes drilled through, near the top of the cone.

That is supposed to allow some gas to blow out, flaring the spent cap a little to make it easier to remove.

The flash channel in them was also supposed to be shaped a little different to encourage better ignition.

Cains sells a Spitfire nipple (made by MSM) that is supposed to "throw more fire at your powder", or some such marketing ploy and is the competition to the Hot Shot's.

I have tried both, which sell at a premium (albeit a pretty small premium - most nipples are 4-5 bucks), and didn't notice any change in the POI.

Don't know if they ignited the powder better because I don't get misfires on any sort of regular basis - so can't say they cut it down by XX% (and I shoot both Goex and Pyrodex - but do use mag primers when shooting the Pyro).

If you think they will give you some kind of advantage, DO give them a try.

Most shooters would be better served by tossing the nipple on their rifle once a year and simply replacing it with a "standard" nipple.

1/4 X 28 thread size T/C nipples are.
I prefer Knight Hot Shot nipples on my 45 T/C Hawken. Getting hard to find these days since Tony Knight sold out though. Occasionally on EBay I see Knight's being auctioned.

TC still makes a combo tool. Kinda looks like a three prong throwing star with a hole in the center. Has a hammer on one point, wedge pin puller on another and a nipple wrench on the third. The nipple wrench on this, will work with any nipple for #11 caps. I just saw some new ones at one of the gun stores I frequent. DANNY

Danny, I have that combination tool that TC made and can tell you it is a great tool that keeps you from dinging up the wood around those barrel wedges! Unfortunately, the nipple wrench part of it does not fit the smaller nipples used on the TC Cherokee, Seneca, or Patriot pistol. I recently bought a pair of Seneca rifle's that came with all of their own accessories. A stationary one piece nipple wrench designed exclusively for the Seneca was part of these accessories.

Nipple 1/4x28 get the hot shots. For wrench best I have used is the one by TC that will remove the wedge and also remove the nipple. I like the claw on the thing when I get a wedge that needs a litle help.
