I just pick up an old Renegade stock #0297 just under the trigger guard plate and my question is seem the guy did a linseed oil job to the stock, will 220 sanding lighting this thig up a little. The stock has some real nice grain but get lost in the dark color.
The price was right

The linseed oil will clog any sandpaper used, plus sanding will create light & dark spots. Recommend using a solvent of some kind: I would use some of the furniture stripping stuff like Formsby's with fine steel wool. This works on old guns very well, no damage, no color shades. There may be other solvents that work. Removed 100+ years of oil on stocks & managed to find old inspecter's marks. After using the solvent, use dry 000 or finer steel wool to rub down the stock. This should remove most of the oil, but little guarantee it will lighten the stock; may make the grain more visible. Refinish to taste.
