I made a full take down and cleaning video for the 1858. I don't think any of you need to watch it and it's over twenty minutes long. So you might want to pass on that if you already know that pistol inside and out but i have a few questions. mostly things people have brought up after seeing it or things I've run into since.

1.) Should i be using Ballistol to protect the gun? I've had some people tell me that that will cause excess fowling.

2.) Should i use bore butter in the barrel? This actually is a question for all Bp firearms. I don't do it but I've ran into a few people who do. They say they do it when storing the firearm. I just use Ballistol and it seems to work well.

3.) How often do you fully take down the revolver and clean the internals? I do it about ever fourth time i take it out and it's always pretty fowled up. I'm left wondering if this is partly because I use oil on the parts.

4.) I had someone in the comments ask me if vinegar and water is a good cleaning solution. i know people use it but i don't know how well it works. Is it better than Ballistol or other off the shelf cleaning oils?

It was more of a video on exactly how to take the firearm apart and get it back together. I had to watch a video my first time doing it and I figured i could make a better one for people. I might have gotten a few things wrong but at least it shows how it goes together mechanically. So don't be to rough on me if you watch it please.

1.) Ballistol is fine
2.) Bore butter sucks
3.) Clean it when it needs it
4.) Vinegar and water makes a good dousch I'm told,
Soap and water cleans best and Ballistol is a lubricant not a cleaning solution.

I also concur with necchi. And I would add that I use Ballistol for rust prevention with the caveat that I make sure the metal is completely dry before applying it. Vinegar is good only if you want the metal permanently etched.

I break down my NMA Remingtons once every couple of years whether they need or not!
