Rather than sidetrack the "Purpose of Patchbox" thread, I'll ask here:

Anybody actually using those depressions in the butt to hold patch lube? Not talking about the boxes with lids, but the things called "holes." If so, do you have problems with the lube migrating to your hands, clothes, etc? Does it pick up a layer of dirt, lint, leaves, etc?
 
I have one on a smoothrifle it does get some debri on it but I don't worry to much about it, I just take a patch (square)and rub in a circle till lubed then put it and the ball down the tube, I use a stiff mix most of the time 50/50 beeswax/bear oil or olive oil.
 
Probably 90% of the rifles that leave my shop have one or two grease holes in the butt and are generally used. The concoction does get dirty through use, but like mentioned earlier, go ahead and smear some on a patch and send'er down range. Winter poses stiffening problems, so a few folks change what they put in the holes. Cheers, Bookie
