I read a book titled Building the Kentucky Rifle by James Johnston. In the book about the breech plug tang screw, he gives the pros and cons about using a tang bolt. He then mentioned about using a wood screw and how easier it is to use than a tang bolt. What do you think?

It has always been a bolt as far as I know. Curiously, if you go back far enough, it was upside down ::

Robin,
On many american muzzleloading guns a wood screw was used. You British fellows always had the good sense to use a bolt. :redthumb:

A wood screw in the tang is seen on early 19th century German rifles...don't know yet about 18th century ones, but would suspect so.

The infamous "brass barreled rifle" has a wood screw in the tang and no triggerplate.
