:hmm: I have seen references to using both a 1.5" oval headed wood screw, and a machine type screw, on a Pennsylvania longrifle, from the tang into the trigger plate like we used to do on Hawkens. What do you think best?

The screw through the tang, stock, and threaded into the trigger plate is the correct way. Make the hole through the wood large enough that the screw does not touch the wood. If the screw is touching the wood, it can affect accuracy.
