Tang sight definitions

Good morning
I have two questions involving tang sights.
1. What is the difference between short, mid and long range tang sights? What range, in yardage does each refer to?
2. How do I determine if a tang sight will mount properly to me rifle and which sight would work? Specifically a Jonathan Browning Mountain rifle.

Muzzle Loaders typically target <400 yards, choice would be the smallest inch variation in that regard.
DPC discusses the variations and fitment to rifles seen in the link below.

"Select your tang sight staff length according to the distance you expect to shoot at. Using common ammunition velocities the following ranges are generally obtained with the staff lengths listed:​

4.0 inch will allow shooting to at least 1600 yards.​

3.0 inch will allow shooting to at least 1100 yards​

2.5 inch will allow shooting to at least 400 yards"​

Historically, think Whitworth and such also Creedmoor in the 1850-70’s, which started LR shooting.
Short range < 300
Mid range < 600
Long range < 1000

Historically, and currently, BP match rifles in UK and in other places where suitable ranges are available shoot out to 1200 yards.

Jerry, a lyman 57sml tang sight will do any thing your browning will do . If you want to shoot bullets then sell your browning, but if round ball is your game it takes alot of practice to shoot over 150 yards. You just don,t need a step ladder on your tang at those distances. I shoot a turn of the century ideal think it's only about inch and half high but a lyman apature on the front with a thin post .

If I can stay on target at 150 yards I'll be very happy, then I know I can be on target between 30 & 75 yards.
