Do you guys tan your own hides.........to make rugs, possibles bags, shirts? If you do I would love to hear some ways to tan..simplest.

Thanks

I would recommend you check out Traditional Tanners and pick up Matt Richards book and vedio on Deerskin to Buckskin - it's by far the best I've found.

I've done hair-off chrome tanning several times, but I can't recommend it as the surest method to produce a really supple "garment quality" buckskin because the results were variable. The initial quality of the hide, how well it's scraped and stretched, the relative strength of the solutions mixed, etc... But it mostly involved easy soaking methods and removing the hair. It involved a lot of work overall.
Van Dyke's taxidermy supply has many different supplies and kits though. Type "tanning" into their searchbox. Maybe they can offer you some helpful advice.

I agree with JWP. Matt Richards' methods work. I've got three deer skins. One is finished and two still need to be smoked. I'm going to try and make a pair of moccasins as soon as I practice on cloth first.

On the Matt Richard's book, be sure to get the second edition. There's a little step he's added that wasn't in the first edition. It makes the buckskin turn our buttery soft every time.
