My wife saw someone at Fort Frederick today using a tape loom and was hoping I could make one for her. Can anyone tell me where to find a plan to make one of these. I hope I'm posting this at the right place. :idunno:

longbow-hunter,can't help you with plans but google it they have lots site on the web. They are fun to weave on but you get a stronger strap with a inkle loom. They both produce a open wrap face weave pattern.Which everone your wife gets just have fun Lynn

Thanks for the help guys. I'll see if I can make one. The inkle loom did not come around until a later time period I'm told..

Don't believe everything the so called authorities tell you, send the Welshman (Short Arm) a pm and ask for the links he has, an open warp face weave is the same whether it's done a a tape loom, box loom, inkle loom or a $5000.oo swdish rug loom

longbow-hunter,Look at this link http://www.tapelooms.com/pastpresent.php

The inkle loom has been around for a long time. These loom over the years have been call tape loom -box loom -rigid heddle loom and yes inkle looms. The word inkle comes from the dutch. All these looms produce a open warp face weave pattern. And to said, inkle looms came later, folks just have it wrong. Now the inkle loom we have today with a string heddle came in around 1923-24. This is the differents between the two. Is the heddle that is used. One is rigid the other string.Just have fun with it.

I make 18th Century tape looms. My wife and I were set up at Fort Frederick (selling tape looms and other 18th C. household items), and she was demonstrating weaving on one of my tape looms. We did an article on how to build an 18th Century tape loom for Early American Life magazine last fall. The article appeared in the Christmas 2009 issue. It is off the news stands now, but a back issue can be purchased at the Early American Life website. (Make sure that you order the Christmas 2009 issue; not the December 2009 issue. They are two separate issues.)

http://ealonline.com/sources/0911/tape_loom.php This link takes you to corrections/clarifications in the instructions for building the tape loom. It also has links for weaving on the tape loom and some photos of tapes that my wife has woven.

A warp-faced weave is simply a type of weave in which all of the warp threads are pushed tightly together, and the weft thread is visible only at the sides of the woven piece.
