I have several original percussion shotguns, two doubles and a single barrel, halfstock 'fowler'. Both the doubles have tapered ramrods, and were intended to be that way, as the ramrod pipes get progressively smaller.
My question is this: The single barrel gun has had 'other' pipes soldered to the ramrod rib. they are obviously not the originals from this gun. They are meant for a tapered ramrod and the gun is fitted with an original period ramrod that is also tapered (down to 1/4" metal ferule). I want to replace the pipes with original type gear. Do you think the original pipes were different sizes to accomodate a tapered rod, or should they be similiar to each other? This is an English style gun, with an under-rib. The pipes are available from TOTW in two sizes.
Can anyone help me out with this question?

The guns with tapered rods that I have seen have ferrules that decrease in size to closely fit the ramrod. Otherwise your ramrod may shoot loose.

I don't know about the DBl.barrel ram rod. The reason for single barrels having tapered ramrods is the addition of the second screw in the side plate. The rifles and smooth bores with the second screw the one in front will not allow for a full size ram rod.
The second screw that holds the front of the lock plate. Some side plates have a second screw that does not go thru to the lock plate. That set up will allow a nontapered rod.
