I'm making a priming horn. I want a fill-hole in the plug. Has anyone ever used standard taps to cut threads into wood? If that will work I'll make a nice brass screw-and-finial.

Yes I have, use the largest tap with a course thread take is slow ,i have used sanding sealer in the hole or nail varnish before tapping,(if you do let it dry before you tap)

I noticed that Highland Woodworking has tap & die sets for wood, as small as 1/2 inch which would be OK for a day horn, but probably a little on the large side for a priming horn.

Can you use taps for metal on wood?

That's the question, indeed.

The reason for the question is that the business end of the priming horn is just a 7/64" hole and a tapered brass plug. So I need to be able to fill the horn somehow.

I could knuckle under and buy this or this. Or I suppose I could glue a brass 'nut' into the plug and not worry about threading into wood.

Any other ideas, anyone?

Darn it, now you went and got me all curious, which usually leads to a big mess on the workshop floor... next week (this week i'm on sixty hours at the mill, so nothing will happen this week) i'll get a tap and see if i can cut a bit of dowel and tap a bit of maple.

just a thought ...

"Any other ideas, anyone?'

I fill all my horns from the front, I would use a very hard, tight grained wood if tapping.
