I have reached a point in which I am at a crossroads. I have been shooting ML's now for over 10 years but only what I would call seriously for about the last 4 or so. I have owned as many as 7 and currently own 4, all rifles, all production guns but one.
I have settled on my favorite. A TC Renegade percussion with a .58 caliber Green Mtn. Barrel (IBS).
What I have been pondering is to purchase the replacement walnut stock from TOTW, (to increase the stock drop and adjust LOP), purchase the iron hardware upgrade from The Hawken Shoppe and use my original lock and set triggers.
I wonder how the rear sight from The Hawken Shoppe attaches to the Green Mountain IBS barrel and if it simply gets drilled and mounted to the tapped holes in the barrel that wouldn't be too bad to do. Then I got to thinking, "What about the front sight". I would like to go with a silver narrow front sight blade and I'm not sure which one to get because I don't know the dovetail size of the front sight on the GM barrel. I pondered further and thought if I upgraded to an L&R lock and Davis set triggers I would have replaced ALL the parts and would essentially be building a faux TC Kit with features more to my liking. I am now faced with the realization that I may have reached the stage where a custom gun might be for me. Up until now, I didn't really know what I would want in a custom gun but I have shot and hunted with enough rifles now to have a really good idea of the "Gun for Me". I would really hate to part with my .58 barrel because it has always been a real shooter but everything else could certainly be modified/changed.
Can you help me with the process of selecting the correct parts to give my Renegade an "Extreme Makeover" or offer suggestions to solve my dilemna.
Thanks in advance,

Idaho,

The silence is deafening. Please don't take that personally. I will take the plunge and share my thoughts and experiences.

I contemplated rebuilding a T/C years ago and wound up with an outstanding barrel for it. Then I began to see all of the other things that I wanted to upgrade and totaled these up. Then I thought about what I really wanted and the T/C would never get there even if I spent a fortune on it. So I went and got a kit that did everything that I wanted and was far happier. I spent about the same money. (The T/C has remained unfired for some time since)

I suggest that you sit down and decide what you really want in your gun. Caliber, length of pull, drop in stock, cast on or off, trigger type, style of stock, sights... The shop around for parts, a kit or in-the-white kit.

I seriously doubt that you will see your modified T/C at the end of this exercise. Possible, but I think unlikely.

Crackstock,
Thank You for your reply.
I can answer most of those questions of myself but am unsure how to figure stock drop or cast off/on. How would I go about getting accurate measurments of these variables? It was getting mighty quiet in here by the way.

Well,
For some reason there hasn't been much input here. Not sure why. Maybe I should have posted in the "Percussion" section, since I am not really "Building" a gun.
I have decided to order the stock from TOTW and the iron hardware kit from The Hawken Shoppe. I really like how my .58 1-70" IBS GM barrel shoots but the TC Renegade stock just does not have enough drop for me to comfortably shoot the iron sights, peep sight would be fine but I don't want to use one.
I will post the results when I get the gun completed in case someone else is having the same thoughts as I.

I have the GM 1" x 32" x 1:70" drop in barrel in Flint...unbelieveably accurate barrel...completely understand you wanting to keep it.

Several years ago I bought a .56cal smoothbore which as you probably know is in the Renegade stock...tried it at the range once, sold the stock on EBay...WAY, WAY to short.

I found that the early style Hawken stocks had much longer LOP which of course adds more drop and I've gradually found/bought/refinished/swapped out my Hawken stocks so I've got them with the longer LOP, and my .58cal Flint barrel rides in one of those.
