I am a flintlock guy, my brother just offered me a TC Hawken percussion kit for free that he bought my dad about 20 years ago that he never put together. I am sure my brother doesn't have a clue of what it is worth, I have a ballpark figure in mind but am unsure myself. I don't need it and would take advantage him and of his offer considering what it is worth.

What say you experts on such stuff?

if he has no use for it & he's offerin' it willingly I don't see how you'd be takin' advantage of him. looks like to me he's just bein' a good brother.

that bein' said, twenty years ago the kits likely went for 'tween 2 & 3 hundred and now he could likely get 3 to 4 hundred on gunbroker for it. so, if it'll soothe yer conscience give him a couple C-notes & a big hearty thank you hug. put it together & keep it as a link to dad.

Respectfully, Cowboy

Yes I agree with the other two guys how do I keep the rifle when I would do it's put together the rifle and get a coin or make a heart but your father's initials into it and give it back to you brother if he shoots and the coin will be the date of your father was born

My dad is 98, not in the best place financially, I help him out from time to time.

My brother is going to inventory the kit to make sure it is all there. He says there is a little rust visible and that the kit is 30 years old.

I decided to make a backdoor contribution to my dad's bank account without hurting his pride. I told my brother I would send him $300 for the kit which he could give to my step mom to squire away. That way if I put the kit together and sold it later no feelings would be hurt.

I have done two scratch builds, a Beck rifle and English fowler and one squirrel rifle build from a precarve so building the kit will be pretty easy for me.

I think that is a generous price. I would not have paid that much for the kit if I were buying it from a stranger. I would have paid somewhere between $200 and $250 since completed rifles like that sell for around $350. But, you are dealing with family and that is a different thing entirely. You did a good thing and you can sleep soundly. I like the idea of putting a coin when your father's birth date on it in the stock of the rifle. Good idea and neat way of honoring your father.

Class move

HEY Eric are we still put the rifle together cut the coin in the stock and give it to your brother anyway that way here have something always father and you can you're a good guy God bless you and keep you safe

You're to be commended for your thoughtful solution.

Mt first MLer "build" in 1976 was your kit and still have the completed rifle. After completion, found that it was a severe "cheek slapper" and eliminated that problem by removing a lot of wood from the comb and cheekpiece. This rifle has shot 6 elk and was used this fall in Colorado. Never even had a hint of a problem. It's the 3rd down in the pic....Fred

There was a TC flintlock kit (New Old Stock) that sold on gunbroker about two weeks ago for something like $390.00 if I remember correctly.

Two of the TC's I own were someone's kit build. One is in the 2K serial number range and the other is in the 10K.
