I am looking to get another barrel for my TC Hawken. I want to get a 45 cal twisted for round balls. Currently I have the factory 50 cal barrel 1/48 twist. Looking to get a replacement barrel. Checked w/ Green Mt. and Pecatonica river and they do not have them. Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Flint or caplock...???
I have a 50 cal. flint Grn. Mtn. bll that I'd let go to someone who will shoot it.
Otherwise...try Tip Curtis. He had the best ( last) supply I know of.

Green Mountain no longer makes a "drop in" replacement barrel for the T/C's and Lyman's which is why no one has one.

That leaves you kinda/sorta three options.

1) check the "for sale" sections and hope to find what you are looking for used/nearly new - this would be your most economical option (unless the barrel turns out to be less that pristine)

2) buy a drop in from The Gun Works - you specify a number of the specs but they build a "drop in", pretty close to the product you used to get from Green Mountain.

But wait, the price tag is $350 (plus shipping and maybe tax depending where you are).

I believe Stonewall Creek has said they will provide the same service but have not (to my knowledge) published a price as of yet.

3) Get one of the shops to put together a barrel for you.

You would choose the barrel (150-265 bucks), the plug (35), the rib (25), thimbals (say 20), sights (15-75 unless you want something really specialized) and then pay the "gunsmithing" to put it all together -

Cut and crown the barrel (or leave it at 36") - 20 bucks
Install the plug - 25
Cut dove tails for sights (2) - 40
Install the rib - 60 minimally, maybe 90 bucks

The cheapest I come up with here is $390 but you could drop 500 bucks without blinking fast.

Either option 2 or 3 would also leave the barrel "in the white" so you would either have to blue it or have it blued unless you wanted to leave it in the white, which is acceptable from a function point of view...

Yeah I thought about the cost. I could probably keep my eyes open and purchase a whole used gun at the cost of what the barrel may cost. Thanks guys for the suggestions!!

There's a fellow who rebores and relines barrels at a fair price. See him recommended here frequently. Maybe find a used and have it relined? His work is highly regarded.

I spoke to the gentleman at Stonewall creek. Very nice guy, he can build about anything you want. To create a "drop-in" for a TC with just Std features, I believe around 400 would cover it.
Of course doing it that way you can get what you want, rather than what Grn mtn chose.

If you have a barrel built, send them the stock so they can check the fit and insure the hammer lines up with the nipple.

I'd really give a lot of thought to the one posted in the classifeds, it's got some really purdy wood on it.

There's yet another route, unless the situation here is lots different than other places.

Looked over a TC Hawken 50 cal yesterday that was rougher than a cob inside and out. I could probably pick up the whole works for $100. If the Hawken fit me better, I'd probably move on it. Lotta sense in having a "donor gun" around for a model that's discontinued, both for parts and for a sewer pipe that can be rebored cheaply to something useful.

there's a .45cal T/C Hawken barrel on evil-bay right now. they want the same price for just the barrel as the member here wants for his complete gun. and as mentioned above, it has some mighty good-lookin' wood on it. luck & have a good'en, bubba.

Look around I got a new green mountain drop in, for a 50 cal for $240. shipped. Muzzleloader Supply had 1 or 2 left. They are round ball barrels, 32" with a 1 in 70 twist. Might check with them. 877-397-3008 Great to deal with, shipped it fast. :hatsoff:

Just received a new TOW catalog. Inside was a notice that GM is ceasing production of ML barrels and that what they have in stock is all they will be getting.

So, there is another rumor to add to the never ending speculation about their barrels!
