A local guy has a new englander 12 gauge with several chokes, very good condition. Looks like its never been used. He wants 350 for it. Can anyone help me with the value of this gun. I have looked on auction arms and gunbroker but cant find the same gun. Any help appreciated. I have many muzzleloaders but this would be my first shotgun.

I have seen them on auction arms recently for anywhere from $125-$200. For what he wants you could probably find a good used double barrel. Or at least close to that amount. Even if you had to put a few more $'s with it, i think you would be more satisfied with the double barrel.

I believe the price is a bit high. I have seen them on austion sites for about $200. A 12 ga barrel can be had for $175 if you already had a New englander rifle.

Check out the Pendersoli 12 double gun on the classifieds right now! That ought to give you some idea of what you can get for that kind of money!

Phil,
Just last year, Sept-Oct, I bought a 54 cal. New Englander. It was slightly used (shot maybe 10 times) and I paid $165.00. The longer he keeps his $350.00 New Englander the price will come down to a reasonable point.

Last week I took delivery of an 12 gauge English Fowler for $500.00. The lock was only test fired. So unless you really need to have the New Englander now, I would either keep looking or make what you feel is a fair offer and go from there.

Sincerely,

Thanks everyone for their posts. You all have definetly saved me some money. I went back and offered him $200 for it. At first he wouldnt consider that price. I told him the info I obtained here and he said he would consider it. So, I will wait for him to come down or find a better deal. Again Thanks all, this is what makes these forums great.

Phil,

I got your PM and replied. Yes, $350 US is a little steep, but it's all relative. As a comparison, I paid $400 Canadian (about $335 US) for a used model in vg condition with both .50 cal and 12 ga. (straight cylinder - no chokes) barrel. If you really want that gun they are tough to find so it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. Like I suggested, try playing it cool and bargaining him down. If you got it for %250 I'd say that's a great price and $300 is still worth it if you get years of enjoyment. How many chokes does it come with? If you found a straight barreled model, you'd pay $50 to have it choked with 1 choke supplied. Chokes are about $25 if you can find them, so factor that in.

I think paid $150 for mine in 1989 in kit form. I think the complete version was under $200 new for the wood stock model. This was before it came with interchangable chokes (or any choke at all).

With the rifle barrel it becomes a handy all-around hunter. $350 seems mighty steep, even so.
