Got a steal of a deal on a TC New Englander. The bore is good, but the stock needs some help. A few deep gouges and nicks here and there. An off center hole in the butt of the stock for a sling. Some rust where the original owner had scope rings mounted. Anyhow, I'm getting cabin fever bad and need a project. I want to clean this gun up. Can't stand shooting a gun that looks neglected. Looking for tips on refinishing the stock. My plan is to use some "dads finish remover" and sand carefully. Any suggestions on finish. I've always used BC true oil, not too impressed with the finish. Looking for a thick gloss finish. The gun also shoots way high even with the rear sight bottomed out so I think I need a taller front sight. Where should I get a new sight.

See .32 squirrel droooool, post, find out who built that stock and send yers to him! OMG I would PAY for that! I'm saving now...gotta get a custom!

No, some of the New Englanders came with wood stocks. They even made some with shotgun barrels. The one I have came with a synthetic stock, but it shoots nice groups so, I guess I'll keep it.

I have never seen one that was plastic. Would rather not see one as far as that goes. Larry

Mine has a wood stock. Has nice grain to it, just looks like somebody didn't care much for the gun.

I thought the New Englanders all had phony stocks .. some kind of plastic. ... No??

The vast majority of NEs had walnut stocks and 26" barrels. The later, synthetic stocked NEs had 24" barrels.

I'm not aware of anyone offering precarved stocks for NEs, but any NE stock could be used as a pattern for duplication.

They switched to plastic because they could not keep the stocks from cracking on the cross bolt. They replaced 3 stocks for me and finally they said they would not replace it anymore and sent me a plastic stock for my 50. I sent it back again and told them I didn't want it back. About 4 months went by and it came back with the same barrel and that was it. They replaced the stock this time with one with a rubber recoil pad and the trigger and lock, everything was new. They bedded the recoil lug, and the barrel breach, and the cross pin. I will say it has not cracked since. I did not like the new stock. I liked the steel plate instead. I still have it, but I hardly shoot it anymore.

The NE I had and sold was a wooden stock.

Never could get comfortable with the thing.

I prefer the NE stock to that of the TC Hawken and Renegade. Its all in the fit of the rifle to the shooter.

Just didn't 'feel right'.

Not too happy with the Renegade either, but the Hawken fits me like it was designed with me in mind.

And no I will not part with my Renegade. It is my only gun with a smooth bore. And I can hit my targets consistently with it.

After you strip it use some Minwax Red Mahogany stain followed by some Minwax urethane spar finish and you'll get a gloss finish that's weatherproof. Never done it to a muzzleloader but this is what I've done to several AKs that I've owned and has turned out great.
