Hey guys, purchased a .50 white mountain carbine years ago and never got around to doing anything with it, Bore is a little pitted. Couple questions what receiver sights are available for them? I’ve also seen they were made it several twist rates. Any markings or serial number ranges to determine the twist? Any must do mods or improvements to do?
Thanks
Ryan

TC made a tang peep for their guns(out of production and prices have gone stupid high), Lyman makes the 57sml that will work if you can find one in stock anywhere and Williams makes one as well. All of these will require the drilling and tapping of a middle hole on your tang.

No way to know what twist without doing the old ramrod trick and it’s not absolutely foolproof.

Other than the sight, biggest improvement would probably be to smooth/slick-up the trigger parts to get the pull a bit lighter/smoother.

First thing to check is to see if the front screw in the tang is machine threaded into the trigger guard version or the wood screw version. The wood screw version has a tendency to readily split the stock. See this thread on how to fix and the issues associated with the wood screw version:

T/C used to fix them for free, but those days are long gone.

Lyman 57 and Williams Foolproof will both fit the rifle. Use those made for Hawken rifles.

Hey Chorizo, just checked mine, and it is a wood screw version, I’m interested in doing this upgrade to machine screws, do you happen to know a source for them?
Thanks
Ryan

Amazon. You may need something longer than 1 1/4" and 2". The 1 1/4" are for the inserts that I made for the back screw on mine. The front was the newer threaded version.

Unfortunately I was never able to find, even locally at a screw company, a black phospate finish version. The SS doesn't bother me.

I want to be able to shoot some stout hunting loads out of mine and didn't want to split the stock. Going to shoot the No Excuses 485 grain in my 54 cal.

I have even decided to get a second custom barrel for it. I am getting a renegade barrel cut to 21" and bored out and relined to 54 Cal with a 1"38 twist. Why, you might ask? Well, as I like to say, I do what I want because in my defense, I have been left unsupervised!

I was lucky on mine as some trigger work had been done and it sits at slightly less than 4 lbs and is nice and crisp and repeatable. I have Williams ghost ring firesights installed on the first barrel and on the new barrel I will the same firesight rear sight mounted at 4" from of the breech to give me a slightly longer sight radius.

I have been shooting the CVA Deerslayer 385 grain with 100 grains of Triple 7 and a 58 cal over powder wad out of it and it gives me "ok" 2" groups at 50 yards. Groups don't vary much between 85 grains and 100 grains. I think part of it is the short sight radius.

I be thinkin that the 485 grain longer No Excuses bullet with 1:38 twist and a more aggressive (deeper) rifling with a longer sight radius will make for a more accurate gun.

Of course, it may not be the first time that I am full of it too!

I’ll probably be bending your ear more then, I’m leaning toward sending this barrel to Bobby Hoyt to be turned into a .54
