Celebrated Thanksgiving morning by being on stand waiting for it to get light enough to see...nasty cold, rainy weather with tornados for the past 2 days finally cleared out and it was dark, cloudy, dripping / misting with 10-20mph winds...but I HAD to go.
About 8:00am I’m surprised by a large Doe coming through the oak flat in a hurry...not really galloping, but a few quick steps walking, then a few body lengths trotting, obviously trying to get somewhere or away from something in a hurry.
When she stopped 50yds out in front of me and looked down her back trail for a few seconds, I thought 'hot dog', luck is on my side for a change, and I let her go just knowing a 12 point buck was sure to be on her track...she turned and continued on, and I got myself all ready on full alert, set the trigger, slipped off the hammer stall, and knowing he’d take the same track following it like a blood hound, I lined up on the spot where I’d shoot him and waited.
I waited, and looked and waited...then off in the distance through the wind blown trees, I saw a brief movement...then closer, another slight movement...and closer, finally it came into full view...an old, slow poke deer hound !!
But a good Thanksgiving chuckle none the less”¦
