I'll be going back out for deer in the morning. Sitting ,quiet in the new snow. With a smoothbore flintlock across my knees, the same as it was 200 yrs ago. Except, I'll hear passenger jets passing high overhead, and the sound of traffic from the highway about 1/2 mile away.
The two just don't seem to go together.Hopefuly, the jets and traffic will go away.

You mean that roaring and rushing sound I hear isn't the mighty falls on the undammed and untaimed river nearby?

Good luck. It ain't remote and total wilderness, but it's the best we've got. Could be worse.

Yes it could. We could allow the past to slip away, and that would be a shame.
It's amazing when you think about it.200yrs ago everything west of the Hudson river was wilderness. Albany was the last outpost.Anyone out of hearing distance from the outpost was on their own.No roads, no settlements , nothing but trails and Indian lands. It is a lot to think about when on watch in a quiet wood.

I live just NE of Binghamton. A little north of me there are large tracts of state lands. Every year after deer season I take up my flintlock and get out and explore some place I've never been. Closest I'll ever come to 1790 when this area was seeing the first post-colonial settlers moving in.

When the snow is fresh you can almost believe you are stepping into the past.
