Although most of the flints I get are excellent quality, there are always some that are cut so thick (and don't have a good flat side) that it is difficult getting them to seat securely in the jaws of the lock. Is there anything that can be done with these except ot toss them back in the bag?

you can cut them with a mizzy wheel, their about a buck each, just google mizzy wheel.

If you have a Dremel tool, you can use the BLUE grinding wheels as well. I've ground down over 50 flints without any visible wear on the grinding wheel. I've found I can hold the flint in my hand without it getting too hot. Wear a filter mask as breathing the dust is very bad for you.
