I wanted to get into BP shooting for a long time. Then a friend let me shoot his Hawken last fall and then I found a CVA Hawken .50 at the local gun show. You know the one, shot two deer last year, my favorite gun, best one at the show. Well I got it then I learned other wise. Oh well I got my Hawken and thanks to all the great info I got from this forum it was finally ready to go. Then had to get all the needed goodies to make it go. Then wait for the weather and schedule to clear. Well Sunday the kids and I went to the range. Not sure who shot better me, my 13 year old son, or 11 year old daughter. But I think we are all hooked. The wife enjoyed having the afternoon to herself to go shopping. Oh well can't win em all. Again thanks to all you all for the help I got from the forum. Aretas

Welcome to the forum! You know, you're going to have to get at least three additional rifles, one for each of your family, plus pistols. Let's see, then a flintlock smoothbore, oh heck might as well get a shotgun too. There's no escape, my friend...
Scott

Welcome to the forum!
Speaking from experience, you are about to take off on a great journey with the kids, with this black powder stuff.
My two are grown up...in their thirties...and they still.....Remember Dad, when we went here, there, did this and that ( all related to black powder) very seldom ever recounting a visit to the shopping mall.
Best of good fortune with the kids.

Howdy Aretas. Welcome aboard!

You gotta watch them wimmin folk. Sometimes they pretend to only have a passing interest in shooting, but in the end, they turn out to be embarrassingly good shots! :haha:

Welcome to the dark side.
Yup one gun is not enough and when you have 2 you can start a breeding program. My wife thinks that rifles breed and reproduce more rifles because there is no other explanation for the number going from 2 to now 9 in just a few years.

Welcome. :hatsoff: Yep, you are hooked for sure. Sounds like you'd better go shopping for more BP rifles too.

Welcome to the forum... Yes, you'r hooked. When I first started I asked a fellow at the club why he needed 12 guns. After all, you can only shoot one at a time. Well now I have 12 guns and 2 more in the works, so what does that tell ya? Where in MO are you. I have two sons that live in New Madrid. We go there a few times a year. My son says they can't find any black powder shooter around where he lives. We sometimes go out and shoot when I am down there.

Good for you. My kids and I shot & did living history events together for years. It's a great family hobby.

Probably for the best that the wife is not interested. It's like taking them fishing, they catch all the fish and you spend all day baiting their hook.

It's great you are getting the kid's involved!...Gett'n our youngn's envolved in ANY shooting sport is always insurance for every Americans future!

My wife, four boys (son's now grown) and I spent some of our happiest memories with our tribe during our B/P outings and Tipi living!....Now getting ready to start with my grandkids!!

Watch your topknot and keep yor' powder dry!

Rick

Welcome to the forum and yes, get the wife interested. The more familys we get into the sport the longer this sport will last.

.....after a 36 cal. in the white, had to try building a Issac Haines, then a Bess to see what
the Rev. War guns were like, and a Springfield for
the CW, Track of the Wolf on the credit card over
and over, sleeping on the couch ......

These guys didn't warn me either!
TR

PS In fact they encouraged me, now my life is wrecked!

Thanks all for the kind words. Not sure how I will ever get that many guns in the house.
We have been doing medieval living history for many years, including blacksmithing, handtool woodworking, bowmaking, and such. So I'm already running out of room in the garage with all those tools. And I'm running out of ways to explane the new stuff that shows up. It's going to be hard to explane 2,3,or 4 guns when the last time she checked there was only 1.

OH well I guess thats part of the fun.

Jim we are located on the south edge of KC,MO

Well, if you are near Kansas City, then that is quite a ways north of the southeastern corner of the state. Right in the boot heel on the River. Thanks for the reply.

Welcome to the board and congrats on the new hobby. :hatsoff: My very first intro to bp was a .50 cva hawken too.Nice to see someone else in my neck of the woods. I'm just south of you in belton. Wherebouts do you go shooting?

KidMaverick,
The only place around here I know of is Lake City Range in Blue Springs. Your closer then you think were in Grandview.

Aretas

That's cool. I didn't know of any place in the area to go shooting. My parents have some land down in the osceola area. That's where i've done all my shooting. It's about 1 1/2 hour from here.Blue springs is a lot closer lol. Maybe we could get together some weekend and do some shooting.
