Looking for your input and experiences...
found a CVA hawken pistol, sometimes known as a mountain pistol. its .45, in great shape and priced at 125 beaver coupons!

looking for your valued input on this and your experiences. what is it worth ect.
I dont really need it, but it keeps coming forward in my thoughts.
Is it possible that I'mSmitten with another gun??? :hmm: :rotf:

I don't have one but an aquaintance does and he thinks its a good shooter. I've toyed with getting one in .54 to go with my .54 rifle. I think they are a nice looking peice.

I can't see as how that's a bad price. Especially considering CVA doesn't make them anymore. They're only gonna go up in price. If you get it, post pics pls. :)

Please take notice, the CVA "Hawken" and the "Mountain" Pistol are two different guns. The CVA Hawken has adjustable sights and a brass butt/grip cap, and the CVA Mountain pistol has a plain rounded wooden butt/grip. You need to get some more info. or pictures.

IMHO, either gun ought to be worth the price, IF they are in very nice shape, though the Mt. Pistol is probably a lot rarer find. Neither is currently in production, as CVA has ceased making all sidelock rifles and pistols.

Good Luck!

WV Hillbilly,
it sitsin a local shop and they have it tagged both ways...hawken and mountain. it is a 45. what caught my eye was the rude and crude nose cap, its pewter like on my "definatly USA made" mountain rifle. That big 'ol hunk of unshaped grey pewter just is screaming my name.
Dont have a pic, was looking on the web and found some older hawken pistol pics, those are not it. Leaning towards the mountain model.

I'm thinking I need to get back there and do the deed!

Still looking to here from the masses as to what they think of it and past experiences!

That hunk of crude pewter for a nose cap identifies it as a Mountain pistol. The Hawken has brass everywhere on it.

I had a Mountain Pistol quite a few years back, that I foolishly traded off. It was a tough good shootin' gun, but they were plenty common at that time, so I figured I'd find another if I ever wanted another.

Things change, and I never did find another nice one at a reasonable price. Now CVA doesn't make any of their old standard pieces--just those awful inl*nes! Deer Creek makes a virtually identical copy of the CVA Mt. Pistol (I guess they are still selling them?).

Anyway, I'd go for that Mt. Pistol without any reservations or second thoughts... especially if you like the CVA Mt. rifle and want the companion sidearm. Another nice thing about the CVA pistol is that it was rated for fairly heavy charges of powder. I remember that it actually shot best with near maximum loads.

WV_Hillbilly

PS In your place, I wouldn't let that pistol get away from me!

Follow up...epilog.

Well I went back and looked at it again, it is a cva mt pistol in .45.
thewood was real basic, the front site was too thick and the trigger just terrible.
But I had to go back and see. My intentions were to buy it, made an offer (reasonable) was not accepted, AND THEN.......
my eyes spied something new in the case
since last saturday.....
low and behold, a 50 cal william parker, used but not abused at a plew trade value of what they wanted for the cva. I brought it home.
will see if it shoots as good as other W.Parkers I have been around. If it outshoots my trapper for me, the son gets the trapper to learn on.

I thank everyone for their input, it has value and cant be bought in stores! remember that! :hatsoff:
