opinions on muzzleloaders are like those of cattle growers, hot rod enthusiasts, fly fisherman, etc.
which ever it is one has is the mostest, bestest, and the only one worth having.
then there are us slobs that like anything that goes bang.

He didn't make reference to a specific issue. I'm new to the sport and just some without spending a lot.

Do you already own a TC Hawken? Would suggest a proper cleaning, then get yourself a supply of lead roundballs, patching material, percussion caps (#11), maybe a new nipple and some blackpowder. Then go shoot the gun, preferably with someone that already knows how to shoot traditional muzzleloaders.

I’ve had a TC Hawken since the early 80’s and I don’t remember ever having a misfire. And it’s really accurate, too.

Folks tend to break flys and sears. Some of the last production wax castings seem prone to this way more than early.

The only reliability issues I had with mine were from storing it on it's butt and having build-up in the pattent breech. Once I started storing it barrel down, no issuses.

Scout camp I used to work at has TC hawkens, renegades, WMCs…some as old as 40+ years. Obvious wear and tear, plus significant pitting in the high humidity environment, but overall they still shoot. And yes, some have been shot so much the rifling is gone. Only issues they ever had was a bulged barrel due to a scout double balling, and a stripped nipple due to a staff member double charging. Dumb on both accounts.

Only had one problem with TC's, did not fit me but I shot the snot out of them without issues.

The biggest problem with TCs is that they are so common and a available they end up with a loose nut on the back of the stock.
