I was just woundering if the original flintlock rifle were made with touch hole inserts..thank you

Ther are orginal guns in museums with touch hole liners in them, that date way back. So, the answer is "Yes", and NO. Most of the military rifles and muskets were NOT made with the vent liners.

All of the ones I have seen with liners would have been high end guns made in Europe. the lines they have are either gold or platinium. I have not seen an original colonial one made with a liner yet, but do know that it was done when the original one got to big. So Paul is right yes and no.

When touch holes wore out, they would be "bushed". Drilled out, tapped, and a slug of iron threaded and put into place and fitted and then a new touch hole drilled.

Is not a " bushing " a vent hole liner by another name?

I realize that we all think of vent hole liners as being made of a different metal- stainless steel, platinum, gold, german silver, etc., but nothing says that a liner can't also be made from the same grade of steel from which the barrel is made. :hmm:

I did that once. I made a plain steel liner and coned it and put it in. Invisible. I can cone them properly from the inside now.

I think most figure they were used more on high end guns or as repairs, guns barrels could also be cut and rebreeched, Some think that a ot of the existing liners on old guns may have been installed to re-convert from cap to flint in the 20th century as a rebirth of ML grew.
