 I would like to make a throwing knife. I believe the NMLRA has rules on the dimentions. Can anyone tell me what they are? Thanks?

I'm not sure about minimum/maximum dimensions, if there are any, but do know the handle has to be thicker than the blade. Some throwing knives just have thick pieces of leather riveted on each side. I have one that just has a piece of rawhide wrapped around the tang and stitched along the bottom.

knives must be traditional hunting style from east coast to rocky mtns. with at least one edge sharpened for use back to hilt. max with of blade 2 1/2 in. overall length of knife 16in. the length of the handle shall not be over 1/3 overall length of knife. handle must be thicker than blade and covered with natural material. as per nmlra rule book 2001 edition. Whew!! Len Graves

Thanks for the enlightenment Len, I couldn't find my (very) old NMLRA rules book. At least I got the handle part right!

Strangely enough. somebody asked the same question two day ago, and I still had the book opened to that page on my bench, so no trouble. Glad ta help. Len

Thanks for the information. I will follow it for completing my throwing knife. I can always depend on the fellows on this forum for information.

Can you clarify for me if it is the handle with the natural material that must be thicker than the blade or just the tang part? I am guessing the tang and natural material.

Thanks in advance.

I would say that anything other than the blade would be the tang/handle, and that is the part that needs to be thicker than the blade.
