I bought a throwing knife from Dixie. It's 12 inches long. It will last forever. I bought my hawks from Stan Winkler, all hand forged. I can stick the hawk most of the time. I may make the knife stick once out of 50 tries. It turns over so fast I'm having a hard time making it stick. Any advice on what metal to make a throwing knife out of, length, weight, etc. Or should I just keep throwing and hope my skills improve?

Thanks,

Try keeping your wrist straight. Sounds like you are flipping your wrist.

How is that grubby little blacksmith in St. Gen doing? Haven't seen him for a while?

Keep at it. Do you throw blade or handle first? You don't really have to throw that hard to get it to stick once you figure the range. Follow through is important also. You might have to throw a bit closer to the target than you do for a tomahawk. When you adjust your throwing distance, you'll probably only be moving toward or away from the target in a matter of a few inches. Relax when you throw and don't give up.

stand with your back against the target block, take 5 1/2 normal steps n start throwing from there. You may need to move a 1/2 step either way to get the rotation right. Throw from the handle n not the point. Hope this helps some. Watch how the blade hits the target n adjust your distance accordingly.if the blade is hitting flat with the handle down move back a bit. if it hits with the handle up move forward a bit. It will take some practice but once you have your starting distance down it will get easier YMHS Birdman
