Now I understand the WHY the people running a gun show want to tie off all of the guns people bring to the show and I actually WANT them to tie off my Flint Lock when I'm carrying one around.

The problem I've had is the inspector never knows how to tie a Flint Lock. He usually tries to wrap the nylon strap around the cock and the trigger. He sometimes wraps it around the frizzen and the trigger and sometimes he wraps it around the frizzen and the S curve of the cock. None of these will stop the cock from being pulled back and released.

A long time ago I didn't say anything to them about it but sure enough, when I got inside somebody looking at the gun would cock it and fire it before I could say "DONT DO.." CLICK! "THAT"!

Now when I take a Flint Lock, I fully lower the cock and then I carefully explain to the inspector "Run the tie between the hammer screw and the back of the hammer as I point to the top jaw support at the rear of the cock. (I don't call it a cock because they don't know what a cock is and in this age of Diversity I don't want them to get the wrong idea about me). Now I'll hold this (the frizzen) down on the hammer and you loop the tie around the front of it (the frizzen) and pull it tight."

When done this way, the lock is securly tied. No one can cock it and the nylon tie isn't rubbing on the wood of the stock.

bob1961: Sorry but my camaras ability to get a picture on the web isn't working right now.

To help you see what I'm talking about if your holding your flintlock in your lap with the cock all the way down (in the fired position), close the frizzen down on top of the flint (or the cock, which ever hits first). This is the position everything will be in when the tieing is finished.

There is an upright piller (for want of a better word) behind the cock Top Jaw Screw and between this and the Top Jaw Screw there is usually a little space. The place I am refering to is under the top jaw which is holding the flint in place.

If you were actually tieing your gun, you would run the nylon locking strap thru this space, then around the front of the frizzen and pull it up tight.
Clear as mud! Sorry but that's the best I can do right now.

i went out to the garage and tried it....guess what it worked
